Impact of instructional designing for enhancing students’ motivation in digital game based learning

The use of digital game-based learning for early childhood is growing rapidly with technological enhancement, but without sound pedagogy and well defined instructional design model it’s totally ineffective. In developing countries like Pakistan, there are hundreds of out of school kids and they can be educated by utilizing digital game based learning strategy with properly defined and complete instructional design model. For this purpose there is a rapidly increasing number of educational games targeting early childhood education, however there is a notable lack of evidence to support their effectiveness. The best way to increase the learning effectiveness of the educational games is utilization of a well-integrated instructional design model. The instructional design model is a plan or framework of teaching and learning activities in which learning is organized to motivate students to learn, feedback and evaluation is also integrated within this model.

In order to increase motivational level by using digital game based learning a research is performed in out of school kid’s schools of Islamabad under the funding agency by (FIT-ED) of the Philippines, we developed a maths learning game “Measure Land” for out of school kids and main focus was on instructional design model adapted from ARCS model to improve learning motivation.

Comprising the components of attention, relevance confidence and satisfaction, the ARCS model has been widely applied to instructional design processes and modifications connecting learning motivation with effectiveness. We checked the motivation level of two hundred participants of our research by using IMMS (Instructional Material Motivational Survey). A questionnaire comprising of 36 questions related to attention, relevance, confidence and satisfaction was circulated among the both groups experimental group and control group, the results completely visualized that group of students taught by “Measure Land” game showed more motivation towards learning, and kids learnt through sound instructional design model were more motivated, satisfied, confident. This research was a big step to support right and productive use and implementation of instructional design modelling in digital game based learning. My experience as an instructional designer in this project was really fruitful and on the basis of my research and its positive response I start developing educational game with complete team of young students in Game Centre of a private University of Pakistan, where students are working on not only Maths learning applications but also on all other subjects’ games like TLOG (transparent learning online game), Traffic rules games, Solar system and many others. In near future, our education system will be dominated by digital game based learning and if we wanted to make it effective and productive then good and strong instructional design models are required. Our game developed on the basis of instructional design model cater all the requirements for self-based learning from grade one to grade four. Measure land helps kids to make mathematics skill best by adding fun factors and thrilling activities. Rewards and achievements earned at the end of every task boost the kid’s morale. No winning and no losing keeps the kid enchanted with the experience of the game.
