Learning through Interactive Whiteboards Technology in Classrooms

With rapid advancement in technology, it has also entered in tradition learning classrooms. Interactive whiteboards technology is one of them which is now being used in all types of learning environments and has replaced customary black and white boards. These boards are used with projector, computer and smart touch board. Most important part in this system is smart touch board which is used by teachers and students to test, write, rewrite and draw. They use visual experiments including graphics, illustration and animations. Being elaborative and concise this technology is being encouraged at schools. It provides opportunity to the teachers to explore new teaching pedagogies in the classrooms. According to British Educational Communications and technology Agency, interactivity whiteboard animation technology enhances learning motivation, provides opportunity of collaboration, visual learning with attractive presentations and are easy to use. Furthermore it introduces different learning styles. These methods are normally categorized into three modalities.

  1. Visual Learning: In visual learning, it is used by writing text, drawing pictures or series of images (animation). It is fact that visual elements play very vital role in learning as it grabs learner’s attentions and help him/her to understand topic more clearly.
  2. Auditory Learning: In auditory learning words or vocabulary are used orally with pronunciation and are targeted to teach words with accurate pronunciations.
  3. Tactile Learning: In tactile leaning learner is being involved in certain activities, where he/she can interact with learning material and several self-assessment activities.

Interactive whiteboards technology has brought following innovations in tradition class room environment which is rapidly enhancing learning capabilities.

  1. Capturing data from other tools. Multiple programs can be embedded in single screens.
  2. Emphasizing various pattern by using principle of color, movement etc. to highlight a topic or theme. Attractive part of screen can be highlighted whereas other parts of screens can be hidden.
  3. All contents on interactive whiteboards can be archived and shared among multiple users.
  4. Annotating notes are embedded, through special pen, which is used to add notes, hyperlinks and separators etc.
  5. Gamification learning technique has used, like interactive drag and drop of objects, rearranging words and joining puzzles makes learning more exciting.
  6. Through networking multiple individuals and devices can interact with learning activity.

In effective use of interactive whiteboards technology new applications (software) are key elements. These applications include virtual experiments, simulations/animations and games which are prepared for specific courses. It is effective tool which is supported in lesson plans, provide with diversity of resources, and also interaction and participations of students in classes. It simply concludes that this technology is very useful in abstract, complex and difficult topics in learning.
